Happy Holidays from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

As I write this, I’m thinking back to exactly one week ago, when I was standing on stage in front of a full house at Drayton Entertainment’s St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.

The occasion was Drayton’s Christmas Cabaret, an event that ultimately generated over $8,000 for The AFC. Alex Mustakas and David Connolly had graciously invited me up at a break in the show to say a few words about the purpose for which the funds were being raised.

It struck me as I stood there – and I have reflected on it many times since – how important the connection is between you, the supporter of our work and us, the staff and volunteer team that does this work that you make possible. I felt the connection strongly that night and am reminded of it on the many occasions I have to talk with donors in person, on the phone, through a letter or email, or here in this space. I am delighted that I have had the opportunity to speak to and thank so many of you who have responded to our call for help in meeting our year-end fundraising goal. And I am hopeful that there might be more such opportunities in the days ahead.

I am lucky to work with an incredibly dedicated team, for whom kindness and caring come naturally. I couldn’t be more proud of what they do to help vulnerable members of our entertainment community to get through a crisis and to live and work more sustainably in the long-term. When that caring is combined with the financial resources that you provide, we can change lives.

We’re in this together, you and I, and I can’t overstate your importance to what we do here. Thank you for choosing The AFC as your way of helping industry members bounce back from adversity and continue to do great work that enriches us all.

Very best wishes to you and yours for a peaceful holiday season and a better and brighter new year.

Thank you for caring,

David Hope
Executive Director

Testimonial: Pat Canavan

The support from The AFC was beneficial in the long term: it gave us the time we required to change our life plan and embark on better and more secure opportunities.

It was a perfect storm that we didn't foresee. Having an unexpected medical issue led to a work slowdown and failure to secure recurring arts funding led us into a very desperate situation all at once.

The way prices for apartments have become in Toronto, our landlord was eager to get tenants out of the building. We were faced with eviction. The AFC helped us pay the rent and keep our family in our home. This very important, especially with two pre-teen kids to support.

The support we received from The AFC allowed us to refocus our efforts and energies. This was beneficial in the long term: it gave us the time we required to change our life plan and embark on better and more secure opportunities.

The AFC helped us out when we had no alternatives and nowhere else to turn. No safety net is in place to help out artists who are actively engaging in their careers while supporting a family. If The AFC could not keep up with the need for emergency assistance during one of the most significant financial upheavals facing the arts, the effects would be devastating.

Please consider supporting The AFC. The gift you give goes directly to helping artists in need and empowers them when there are no other options. Your gift is an investment because The AFC reviews each application mindfully and provides security where there are no other options. And as someone who needed this help, the feeling of relief was like a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders.

Season of giving: THANK YOU to our supporters
